Jazz at Cri du Port 4 October - HKBM Orchestra

It's the start of the festival Jazz sur la Ville, with 30 events in 20 venues across Marseille between 4 and 26 October.

The Cri du Port starts the proceedings with a performance by the HKBM Orchestra, big band jazz. It starts at 8:30pm and costs12€

If you arive at 7pm you can particpiate in the opening of the exhibition of paintings by Brazilian Painter Fabio Cerqueira alias Binho. The exhibition lasts until 4 November.

Jazz to start the weekend, 3 August

In concert at the Latté on Friday evening, Mariannick Saint-Céran, Paul Pioli and Hubert Rousselet. Mariannick, Réunionaise born in Madagascar, will be perfoming songs from her first album along with tributes to the great divas of jazz and a little bit of Bossa Nova.

The Latté is a restaurant, tea shop and music club in the Panier, 16 rue Echêvé. The concert is at 9pm on Friday 3 August. A fine start to the weekend.

Omri Mor Trio at Cri du Port 7 June

Go along to the Cri du Port to see jazz pianist Omri Mor playing with Nenad Vasilic (double bass) and Karim Ziad (drums). The trio played to unanimous acclaim at the 21st Tel Aviv Jazz Festival. Omri Mor has been playing the piano since he was 7 years old and his experience of classical, latin and afro-cuban music all contributes to his particular jazz style. A pleasant way to spend a Thursday evening.

The concert starts at 8:30 and costs 10/12€ plus 1€ seasonal membership.

Luigi & Pascuale Grasso Quartet 12 April

The Cri du Port in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute presents a concert by a quartet with two virtuoso Italian saxophonists. Described as an Italo-Franco-American quartet brought together by a love of be-bop. Their repertoire includes some of the standards by the greats, Charlie Parker, Theolonius Monk, Bud Powell.

Manuel Hermia Trio, Cri du Port 29 March

Jazz musician and explorer of world music, Manuel Hermia is involved in a number of musical projects, one of which is this trio (Manuel Hermia Saxophone, Flute, Bansuri; Manolo Cabras, double bass; Joao Lobo, drums, percussion). Their album Long Tales and Short Stories won the Octave Prize for the best Jazz project.

The concert at the Cri du Port starts at 8:30 on Thursday 29 March and costs 12€

Tam de Villiers Quartet 26 January

Go to the Cri du Port, our favourite jazz venue, at 8:30 on Thursday 26 January to hear the Tam de Villiers Quartet. He is a British born guitarist who performs with a French saxophonist, double bass player and drummer. The second of their albums, Motion Unfolding, was released in October 2011 and was awarded the Revelation! prize by Jazz Magazine.  Entry 12€.

An evening of Jazz 8 December

At the Cri du Port, starting at 8:30pm Francesco Bearzatti, a gifted clarinet and saxophone player dedicates an evening to Duke Ellington,  and Exultet Trio (accordion, guitar and percussion) provide their very own version of hybrid jazz. Not to be missed. It costs 15€ (plus 1€ membership).

Jazz Concerts 3 and 11 November

Two great jazz concerts at the Cri du Port, 12 euros (plus 1€ seasonal membership fee)

At 8:30 on 3 November Benjamin Faugloire Project, a trio (piano, drums, double bass) who got together in 2005. Now promoting their second album, The Diving.

AT 8;30 on 10 November, Ping Machine, not a trio, more a big band with 13 members and a sound inspired by Darcy James, among others, moving between classic big band, swing and modern. They're promoting their new album, "des trucs pareils"released in September. Definitely worth a look (or listen).

Jazz sur la Ville, Marseille 6 - 8 October

Jazz concerts organised by the Cri du Port.
Thursday 6 October 8:30 Nelson Veras Trio at the Cri du Port (8 rue du Pasteur Heuzé) with Nelson Veras (guitar) Thomas Morgan (double bass) and Stéphane Galland (drums). 10/12€ plus 1€ seasonal membership fee.

Friday 7 October 9pm Giovanni Mirabassi Trio at the Italian Cultural Centre (6 rue Fernand Pauriol) with Gianni Mirabassi (piano), Gianluca Renzi (double bass) and Lukmil Perez (drums)
Gianni Mirabassi, a disciple of the pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, describes himself as a sort of Michelangelo mixed with Bill Evans and Che Guevara. Imagine that! Or even better go along and find out. 10/12€

Saturday 8 October 4pm Marion Rampal, Paul Pioli and Pierre Fenichel Trio at the Merlan library (Centre Urbain du Merlan, Avenue Raimu 13014 Marseille). The trio pay hommage to Duke Ellington by interpreting, not only his great classics but also some rarer compositions such as those written for his religious music concerts. Entry free.
